I have what you might call child-bearing hips. No, that's not my revelation. But it is a fact. Perhaps one day, I may be thankful for them, if I happen to get knocked up and they help to ease the pain of child labour, like they did for the woman I inherited them from. My mother had 3 children, and her longest labour was 2.5 hours.
Anyways, the point is, I have a funny body: tiny waist, average upper body, big hips. I'm that girl that mixes and matches bathing suit separates and leaves you unable to find half of that bathing suit that you just love and can't live without. I'm the girl who has trouble shopping online, because their sizing charts don't consider dis-proportionate ladies.
Getting back to the revelation, I went shopping for work pants on my lunch on Tuesday. There was a great sale, so I tried on 4 pairs. 2 looked great, one did a funny bunching thing, and the third... well, the third I was unsure about. I stood back and took a good look at what the pants looked like. They were kind of trendy and high waisted, with three big buttons and snug from the waist to the hips.
Snug from waist to hips. Remember? Tiny waist, big hips? So the first thing I thought was "Wow, these pants make me look really... hippy". Then the sales girl came over and told me how good they looked. I took another look and I had to agree with her, they did look good. But still, the made me look very... hippy.
And that's when my revelation struck. They look hippy, because I have hips. And the word I should be using instead of hippy is curvy.
Why would I want to get rid of the hips? Do I want to look like a boy? No, not really! And I know for a fact that it doesn't matter how much weight I lose anyways, those are bones in there. It would require surgery for me to get rid of those hips.
And then I thought to myself as I looked in the mirror again, those curvy hips are pretty darn sexy!
So I bought all three pairs!

As a fellow "hippy" girl, I'm with you ~ I love my curves and wouldn't trade them for anything! Granted, I wouldn't mind there being less fat on my hips, but I'm getting there! ;) Love the revelation! You must post a pic of you and your hot pants!
Oh so you are one of "those" girls!!? The ones the entire clothing industry seems to make clothes for - unlike the Bag Lady who has been known to shop in the men's dept. because she has no hips to speak of. Or no waist, if you look at it another way. Or too much waist, no hips. Ah, I give up....
Good for you!!!! I love hearing stories like that! It remindes me of something I would do. Hope you strut your stuff in those curvy pants! :)
What a great post. I have big hips too! My top is probably a size or two smaller than my bottom half. I have the same trouble that you do with finding clothes. Its great to hear that you are embracing them. Curvy sounds much better than hippy. Next time I start to complain about my hips, I'm going try really hard to love my curves. :)
That is so great. I need more realizations like that!
You rock! :-) I am also a hippy, or i mean curvy girl. heh. They are awesome. hahah. You make me smile.
I would ghave done the same...buying all three pairs was the right thing to do :)
That's a fantastic post! I'm so glad that you embrassed your 'curvyness!' Personally, I'd rather be 'curvy' and look like a woman, that have a 'boy body' any day!
I'm a strange shape too....hourglass to the extreme...small waist, big hips, big boobs...it kinda sucks, 'cause pants that fit in the hips, are always too big in the waist, and tops that fit over my boobs, are baggy and gross in the waist....
Why aren't more clothes made for women who are of different shapes? Geeez...whichever designer starts doing that is going to be a millionaire!!
YAY! I love it!!!!
I am a "hip" girl too...I always told myself that if I started to lose my hips that I would stop losing weight...I NEED to have curves...it's what makes me "me".
That is pretty friggin awesome, I bet hipless girls around the world are dying for a set like yours!!!
I echo the bag lady and have never loved it.
this post perked up my day with it's loving happy tone.
thanks for that as I was heading down the bit*** superhighway.
M.
I'm the opposite - no hips or butt at all. But big stomach and big boobs. I bet we could mix and match bathing suits just fine. I will take the big tops and small bottoms and visa versa. ha ha.
You are my sister. I am your opposite. I have no hips. I'm sure labour will kill me! I am supremely jealous of the small waist thing. Even if you pack on a few pounds, the small waist will help you hide it.
you should also try on those dresses that look like they're from the 50s, remind me of sweet 16 dresses with crinoline and just below knee length. They will look fantastic on you.
That's awesome! Love the revelation!!
I'm actually surprised you found pants because I have a small waist and big hips and finding pants is the most frustrating task...either the pants fit my hips and are way too big in the waist or they would fit my waist if I could pull them up over my hips. That's why I love skirts so much more than pants!! Anyways, enjoy your new pants!
Marissa: I usually have the exact same problem, which is why I bought all three pairs! It's a major event when I find pants that fit properly!
Good on you!
(I don't have hip issues, just tummy ones...)
but great post. Love reading stuff like this.
I'm so glad you got all three!!! THis is why it is good to go shopping with someone, especially someone who can give you an honest opinion. That sales girl definitely deserves a kudos for pointing out to you what you coudln't see.
Yes, curvy is the new hippy and CURVY IS GOOD!!
I'm actually pretty small on bottom, but the top half makes up for it. I'm busty. Or, curvy - that does sound better. Doesn't make it any easier to buy a dress, though. Or a suit.
It's good to embrace what we have, though, isn't it? I have to remind myself of that every time I'm clothes shopping!
you go girl! way to embrace the curviness you've got instead of being down about it. i, too have the curves and i am also guilty of the swimsuit mix-n-match.
Good for you - buying all three!
I am your opposite as well. I look like a boy. I have no hips. My mother had three cesarean sections! YIKES! I think hips are really feminine and pretty of course we all want what we don't have!
